Sitz bath — yeh ek bohot simple cheez hai lekin main chahunga ke har piles patient isko seriously le. I recommend it to almost every patient at Karachi Piles Clinic, regardless of their grade. It does not cure piles on its own, but for pain relief, for reducing swelling, and for promoting healing after procedures — it is genuinely one of the most helpful things you can do at home. And it costs almost nothing.
Sitz Bath Kya Hota Hai?
Sitz bath simply means sitting in warm shallow water covering just the anal and perineal area for 10-20 minutes. The word “sitz” comes from German — it means “to sit.” You can do it in a regular bathtub with a few inches of warm water, or using a specially designed sitz bath bowl that sits over the toilet seat.
We actually sell sitz bath bowls at our clinic — you can check them at our shop page. They are very convenient and inexpensive.
Sitz Bath Se Kya Faida Hota Hai?
Let me explain this medically so you understand why it actually works.
Warm water increases blood circulation to the anal area. This helps reduce the swelling in the hemorrhoidal tissue. It also relaxes the internal anal sphincter — the muscle around the anus — which is often in spasm with both piles and fissures. Relaxing that muscle reduces pain significantly.
Also the warm water simply soothes the irritated, inflamed skin. After a painful bowel movement, sitting in warm water for 15 minutes provides immediate, real relief. I have had patients tell me it is the one thing that genuinely helped them get through the day before their procedure.
Sitz Bath Kaise Karein — Step by Step
Here is exactly how I recommend doing it:
- Step 1: Fill a sitz bath bowl or your bathtub with 3-4 inches of warm water. Temperature should be comfortably warm — not hot. Test it with your hand first. Too hot can cause burns or worsen swelling.
- Step 2: Sit in the water so that the anal area is fully submerged. Relax your muscles. Breathe normally.
- Step 3: Stay for 10-20 minutes. You can add plain warm water to maintain temperature if it cools down.
- Step 4: Gently pat the area dry with a soft clean cloth or tissue. Do not rub — rubbing causes irritation.
- Step 5: Apply any prescribed cream after drying if your doctor has recommended one.
That is it. Simple. You can do this 2-3 times a day, and especially after every bowel movement during active symptoms.
Can I Add Anything to the Water?
Plain warm water works very well on its own. Some people add a tablespoon of regular salt. Some add witch hazel. I generally tell patients — plain warm water is fine. Do not add harsh soaps, detergents, or anything that might irritate the area further. Avoid antiseptic liquids like Dettol in the water — they can irritate sensitive anal tissue.
Sitz Bath After Laser Surgery
I routinely recommend sitz baths to my patients after laser procedures for piles, fissure, and fistula. Starting from day 2 post-procedure, sitz baths twice daily help with healing and significantly reduce post-procedure discomfort. It is part of my standard post-operative advice.
How Often Should You Do Sitz Bath for Piles?
During active symptoms — 2-3 times daily. At minimum, once after every bowel movement. This is when the area is most irritated and relief is most needed.
Once symptoms improve — once daily is enough for maintenance.
After procedures — follow your surgeon’s specific instructions. In my protocol at Karachi Piles Clinic, I typically recommend twice daily for 2-3 weeks post-procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Sitz bath se piles mein kitna faida hota hai?
Sitz bath pain, swelling aur anal irritation mein significant relief deta hai. Warm water blood circulation improve karta hai aur sphincter relaxation se dard kam hota hai. Regular use symptoms ko substantially manage karta hai.
Sitz bath kitni baar karni chahiye?
Active symptoms mein 2-3 times daily, especially after every bowel movement. After laser surgery, twice daily for 2-3 weeks as per your doctor’s instructions.
Sitz bath mein pani ka temperature kya hona chahiye?
Comfortably warm — not hot. Always test with your hand first. Hot water can worsen swelling and cause burns. Aim for bath-warm water, around 37-40 degrees Celsius.
Sitz bath kitni der karni chahiye?
10-20 minutes per session. Less than 10 minutes may not give full benefit. More than 20 minutes is not necessary and may cause skin maceration (softening from prolonged water exposure).
Kya sitz bath alone piles permanently theek karta hai?
No — sitz bath is a symptom management tool, not a cure. It significantly improves comfort but Grade 2 and above piles require medical treatment for permanent resolution. Use it as a supportive measure alongside proper treatment.
Sitz bath is simple, effective, and free — start today. But if your symptoms are Grade 2 or above, combine it with professional treatment. Come see us at Karachi Piles Clinic for a proper assessment. Also read about all non-surgical treatment options and our home remedies guide.
